Why servo drive decides filling accuracy: the mechanics of ±0.5% dosing
Accuracy is designed into the drive before it ever reaches the nozzle. This is what separates metering-grade filling from guesswork.
Accuracy starts with the drive, not the nozzle
Most buyers compare filling machines by price, speed and nominal accuracy printed on a datasheet. But the accuracy a machine actually delivers in production is largely set by how the dose is driven. A servo motor turns a pump rotor through a precisely controlled number of revolutions per cycle. Because the chamber volume per revolution is fixed, each dose becomes a repeatable, digitally defined quantity.
Why pneumatic and mechanical drives drift
| Drive type | Typical behaviour | Accuracy risk |
|---|---|---|
| Pneumatic cylinder | Stroke depends on air pressure, temperature and line losses | Dose drifts as plant air pressure fluctuates |
| Mechanical cam | Fixed stroke; adjustment by hand or part change | Changeover is slow; tolerance depends on setup |
| Servo drive | Closed-loop, digitally controlled motion; fill volume is an HMI parameter | Repeatable cycle to cycle; changeover is instant |
What servo control gives you in practice
- Repeatability: the same product and recipe produce the same dose, run after run.
- Instant changeover: fill volume, speed and acceleration change from the HMI — no gears, cams or air adjustments.
- Recipe memory: save product recipes and recall them when the line switches SKU.
- Soft start / soft stop: acceleration profiles reduce splashing, foaming and overfill on difficult products.
- Integration: servo parameters link naturally to line control, counting and data logging.
Five things to check when comparing quotes
- Is every dosing axis servo-driven, or only some? One servo pump head does not make a servo line.
- What is the published accuracy and at what fill volume? ±0.5% on a 300 ml dose is a different claim from ±0.5% on 5 ml.
- How is changeover done? HMI parameter change beats manual mechanical adjustment for multi-SKU plants.
- Can the pump handle your viscosity and particles? Accuracy claims are meaningless if the dosing pump cannot move your product.
- Is CIP possible without disassembly? For hygiene-critical lines, ask whether the servo pump head is CIP-capable.
Facts used in this article: filling accuracy ±0.5% (error ≤1 g); viscosity coverage ≈50–300,000 cSt; GTX series fill range 5–300,000 ml. These are the published manufacturer figures also stated on our specifications page.
