Piston pump filling machines: when they are the right choice

Piston filling remains the right engineering answer for easy-flowing, cost-sensitive products. Where it stops paying, and how it compares with rotor, gear and screw pump filling.

Piston filling still has its place

Piston filling machines displace product with a piston travelling inside a cylinder. That principle is simple, mechanically robust and inexpensive — and for a large group of products it remains the right engineering answer. As part of a full pump-type range, we build them alongside our metering-grade rotor pump fillers.

Where piston filling fits best

  • Easy-flowing liquids: water-like products where an accuracy of a few percent is commercially acceptable.
  • Simple container formats: bottles and jars with generous neck openings.
  • Cost-sensitive projects: where first cost dominates and the product value per container is low.
  • Low automation lines: semi-automatic operation with an operator present.

Where it starts to cost money

Two things change the calculation. The first is product value: at a few percent deviation, give-away on a high-value product can exceed the price difference between machine types within a year. The second is the product itself: viscous pastes and recipes with particles are where a piston machine struggles, because the valve seat can bridge and the piston can crush solids.

Choosing between piston, rotor, gear and screw

Product characterRecommended type
Thin liquids, moderate accuracy, low unit valuePiston or gear pump
Thin liquids, higher outputGear pump
Medium to high viscosity, high unit valueMetering-grade rotor pump
Viscous products with particlesMetering-grade rotor pump
Structured products needing a different discharge principleScrew type — assessed on sample
Facts used: rotor pump filling accuracy ±0.5% (error ≤1 g); viscosity coverage ≈50–300,000 cSt; GTX fill range 5–300,000 ml. The pump type is recommended from the product data rather than from a single technology platform.
